The seeds of the HL-P3 were planted in 1990, two years after Harbeth commenced manufacture of the LS3/5a, and twelve years later, the HL-P3ES-2 (and it's professional version, the Monitor 20) are well established as the best mini monitor in the world. The soundstage is generous and involving, and on suitable stands, ideally away from walls, there are very few clues to give away the small dimensions of the beautiful cabinet work.
It's obvious that designing a small monitor-quality speaker system means that only a small diameter bass/midrange unit can be used. The real challenge for the designer is to achieve a really solid, warm bass response which seems to defy the common sense belief that you need a big-box for a big bass
Developed from the same 'monitoring in miniature' philosophy that led to the LS3/5a, the Harbeth HL-P3ES-2 uses the same response-optimising technique and a complex crossover to create a big-box sound and the measured frequency response of the LS3/5a and HL-P3ES-2 are very similar. The crossover not only divided the frequency range between the drive units but equalises the natural characteristics of the drivers for smooth operation in such a small enclosure. Indeed, the rear mounting of the bass/mid unit was implemented as the optimum engineering solution to achieve a textbook phase transition through the crossover region commensurate with a smooth on axis and power response.
The result is holographic imaging.
The sophisticated cabinet construction and removable front baffle fulfill the Harbeth SuperTunedStructure 'lossy box' concept so that the cabinet colouration is completely controlled. There is no acoustic cue to give away the cabinet's modest volume, which at under 5 litres, produces astonishing bass depth and power.
The HL-P3ES-2 makes a wonderful stereo hi-fi speaker system, or can be used in any position in an AV system including center dialogue.

As with all of Harbeth fine veneers, the entire loudspeaker appears to be carved from a solid block of real wood. These real wood veneers will not be available indefinitely: the EC is investigating the sources of supply. We believe that properly managed, sustainable forests provide this most natural resource to discriminating customers, employment both in the forests and in the UK for cabinet makers, and years - decades - of pleasure to their owners.
