I don't know if you've ever entered a hotel room and felt frustrated because the otherwise state-of-the-art TV has been configured to prevent people interfering with the settings. That is my experience with the Kodak DX 6490. Surprisingly, it has been deliberately engineered to thwart the more adventurous amateur who may get ideas about fitting accessory lenses. At least, this is what Kodak told me when I rang up to complain.
"That's right, Sir. Everyone at Kodak knows the situation with the DX6490. We do warn people about it in the advertising". On checking, it is indeed in the small print, if you look very hard.
But surely Kodak will want to remedy this? After all, the person who invests in a camera with fully manual options is likely to want to do more. Could I buy a wide angle lens if I want to get more in the shot? "Sorry Sir, that’s not possible." Or at least a UV filter to protect the lens (which pops out when you switch the camera on)? Sorry chum, you'll have to get another camera.
It's a great pity, because, to be fair, this is in many ways a great little piece of equipment. Attractive looking, chunky and light, it fits snugly into the hand and is easy to operate. the large bright LCD screen is a real delight. It takes superb photographs -provided you don't get awkward and want an extra wide angle. If it’s telephoto you’re after, there’s no problem. A wonderful optical zoom to 380 mm will help you capture the action at you children’s sports day. And with the easy-share software, you can email every snap automatically to your friends around the world (not that I'd dream of boring my own friends in such a manner, but it's Kodak's Big Idea.)
The other thing they're keen on is their docking unit, an added convenience though expensive and not strictly necessary (They say that MacDonalds make their money on the fries rather than the hamburgers...)
All in all, it has many attractive features, but I have to say it’s a flawed jewel in my opinion, so I won’t be keeping it. They have spoilt it by pretending it's so good you'd never want to extend it further
