The Concert VII model incorporates a Band Pass Reflex System. One of the two bass drivers is housed in a small bass reflex enclosure tuned to 150 Hz, and the other in a larger enclosure tuned to 30 Hz. With careful calculation of the correct cabinet volume, and the tunings of the two bass reflex ports, Jamo achieved a remarkably smooth and consistent bass performance. The diagram of the enclosure clearly shows the ingenuity of the system. At the top of the cabinet is a midrange driver in its own sealed compartment. This is a 167 mm polypropylene driver with a soft rubber roll surround, mounted in a slight recess on the NCC front baffle. This covers the frequency range from 150 Hz to 3.5 kHz. Below it sits the same tweeter used in the Concert V, again with a hole drilled in the magnet pole-piece, and mounted in its own carefully damped enclosure. This combines with the recess in the front baffle to achieve perfect phase response at the typical listening position. The two bass drivers can be seen inside the cabinet, mounted face-to-face, and in their own compartments. What appears initially as a large port below the tweeter turns out to be two ports, combining to move the bass response down to about 30 Hz. The crossover required to sort out the signal stream was designed as a ‘dual slope’ network. It incorporates heavy duty air-cored and iron-cored inductors and polyester capacitors, mounted onto a solid PC board. This is directly soldered to four 24-carat, gold-plated, 4 mm binding posts, which make bi-wiring and bi amping possible. A protection circuit for the tweeter has also been included. The small details that differentiate great speakers from good ones have not been overlooked. The grille frame, instead of being made with the typical wood or plastic of most speakers, is made of 1 mm thick steel plate, which is attracted to the edges of the baffle by small magnets. This simple, but very effective technique, eliminates diffraction, as well as being more durable than the usual plastic lugs. The edges of the bass reflex ports have been chamfered to avoid air turbulence in the ports. Inbuilt adjustable spikes are standard fixtures on the speakers’ feet. The finish is genuine timber veneer and is available in either mahogany, black stained oak, or white. The Concert VII is doing exactly what Jamo had hoped. It has put them right back in the fray, and the Jamo name is once more associated with audiophile loudspeakers; but audiophile loudspeakers that deliver exemplary performance at a reasonable price. Small wander the Concert loudspeaker series has been such a resounding success. (Source: Stereo Buyers Guide, 1991, pages 80-81.)
